Successful Organic Rice Cultivation ! Nayinarkulam village is located 3 kilometers away from the Pattukkottai town. Mr.Venkatraman, 58 years old man with an agricultural experience of 30 years owns 9 acre land. He is following organic farming for the past 8 years of time. He cultivates paddy in 5 acre, rears fish in half an acre, 1 acre for fodder for cattle and poultry and remaining area for rearing cattle and their shelter. RICE Double crop paddy is raised every year. ADT 45 in kuruvai and CR1009 is the paddy varieties raised every year by organic farming. No symptoms of pest and diseases are seen in the field gradually after the practice of organic farming. Yield of around 2000 kg of paddy are obtained in an acre roughly from both the varieties.1200 kg of rice and 800 kg of rice bran is obtained from 2000 kgs of paddy. Rs.25 – 35 rupees price fixed for the one kg of organic rice. COW The farmer owns 20 number of Mura variety cattle, tharparkar and jersey variety 20 numbers on the whole. The cattle were let free in the morning for grazing for their feed within and outside of their farm and out of cultivable lands around. The farmer hints that the freed up cattle for grazing helps in maintaining their health. Grazing alone does not fulfill cattle feed, fodder and rice bran mixed with other feeds are also given twice a day. Out of 40 cows he obtains 80 litres of milk everyday and they sell it to consumers from their farm itself. They do not go out for the sale of milk. Cattle wastes are stored and this FYM (Farm Yard Manure) are sold for Rs. 600/ ton. Cow urine and their wash are drained into the fish pond and main field in their farm. The farmer also prepares panchakavya for his field and also sells the extra panchakavya to other farmers in their village. He sells it for Rs 50/ litre and yearly he sells about 500 litres per year. POULTRY & GOAT The farmer rears about 50 numbers of local poultry birds and few numbers of goats. No separate feed were given to goats. Both the poultry and the goats are fed with the same feed, rice bran mixed with other grains and feed. FISH POND In the half an acre of fishpond, 1500 fingerlings were allowed to grow every year. Katla and rogue are the main varieties of fish grown. Fishes are harvested twice a month and approximately 1000 kg are harvested per month. Per kg of fish sells for about Rs.60 – 80 depending on market demand. Only fresh cow dung is given as feed to the fishes in the pond. No separate feeds are given to fish. LABOUR The entire farm activities are managed with the help of 3 labours only. The farmer proudly says that the sales milk, organic rice, farm yard manure, Panchakavya, goat and poultry support their livelihood expenses including their children education.
